Workplace Safety
Posted on Feb 18, 2010 by Thornton Brothers |
The key to workplace safety is common sense. While OSHA’s list of the country’s most dangerous jobs includes some occupations that may seem outlandish (have you ever seen “Deadliest Catch”?) others are of the everyday variety where these common sense tips could prevent accidents.
According to OSHA, the most dangerous jobs in America are:
- Fishermen
- Pilots
- Timber cutters
- Structural metal workers
- Waste collectors
- Farmers and ranchers
- Power line workers
- Miners
- Roofers
- Truck divers
However, keeping in mind a few simple steps can help keep you safe from harm at work.
Follow rules, regulations and procedures.
Workplace safety teams put in place the proper rules to ensure employee safety. Well trained, these teams are the key to safety at work. They consider all departments and functions of the workplace to assess risk and anticipate problems and accident-prone areas in order to proactively plan a comprehensive approach to prevent accidents.
Be responsible for your own safety.
In order to preclude preventable accidents, you must wear personal protective equipment (PPE) such as the proper clothing, eyewear, gloves, masks, hearing protection, etc. and use the right tools. These items will keep you safe especially when handling chemicals and other potentially hazardous materials.
Engage in good housekeeping practices.
While most accidents are preventable, many can simply be avoided if proper clean up measures are followed. Poor housekeeping practices can conceal hazards that lead to injuries and accidents. And while disposing of waste properly and stowing equipment is key, housekeeping doesn’t just entail keeping an area clean. It also includes removing hazards such as the potential to slip and fall, trip over equipment, eliminating fire hazards and more.
Common sense is the common thread to workplace safety.
Thornton Brothers specializes not only in products that can keep you safe, but expert consulting services as well to properly prepare your workplace to be safe and efficient.
