Saving Resources...in the Restroom

Restrooms are among the most important areas in an office or facility. They require constant attention by way of stocking, cleaning and maintaining the space for employees, customers, vendors and other users. Taking the time to examine ways to reduce resources can offer time and money savings.

New products are now available that easily reduce the usage of water, paper and other necessary supplies. Have you considered implementing any of the following to decrease resources and cost?

Waterless Urinals

Waterless urinals work without water or flush valves. Gravity drains the urine into a vertical trap cylinder that sits atop the drain area. The trap cylinder is filled with a small amount of sealant. Together, the trap and sealant prevent odors from escaping. These units conserve thousands of gallons of water per fixture, significantly reducing sewage and maintenance costs. They are considered to be more hygienic because without water, the wet conditions that cause germs to multiply are eliminated, along with the flushing turbulence that can send germs airborne. The trap cylinder does have to be replaced but are engineered to last for an average of 7000 uses.

Low-Flow Toilets

In the 1950s, toilets used as much as seven gallons of water per flush. Thankfully, that number has decreased through the years and we are now at an all-time low of 1.6 gallons per flush using low-flow models. Design modifications allow gravity and atmospheric pressure push water from the tank to the bowl, then through the snake-like trapway, and off to the sewage treatment plant. It is estimated that switching to a low-flow toilet can save up $100 per year.

Dual Flush Toilets

Dual flush toilets handle solid and liquid waste differently, giving the user a choice of flushes – a whole flush (1.6 gallons per flush) is used for solid waste, while a short flush (0.8 gallons per flush) is used for liquid waste. Its design helps conserve water by giving the user the option to choose the amount of water needed to flush the waste.

Automatic Dispensers

Automatic dispensers offer resource savings as well, and they are typically more sanitary because you do not put your hands, and germs, on them. Among the hands-free offerings are:

Faucets
Soap dispensers
Hand sanitizer dispensers
Hand dryers
Hand towel dispensers
Air fresheners

These products are effective not only because they help reduce germs on surfaces but they regulate the amount of product dispensed, which can equal a great deal of savings in product replenishment.

High Capacity Products

High capacity product options are another important means of reducing waste. Purchasing this way, particularly for the products you use in high quantity such as toilet tissue, paper towels, etc., can lead to measureable resource and cost savings.

Recycling

Reusing and recycling are ways to save in the restroom as well. Consider including a recycling bin for paper next to the trash can. Also, some products can be reused. Items like trash liners that only collect paper waste can be reused several times before wearing out. Utilizing recycled products like paper towels or other paper products help reduce total waste, and waste disposal.
